One of my favorite restaurants of all time is Vapiano. You could literally wake me up at 3 AM for a plate of their whole wheat pasta funghi. Therefore, I was beyond excited when Vapiano also opened its doors in Groningen! If you don't know what Vapiano is: It's an Italian franchise concept you can find all over the world. It's a mix between a restaurant and a more fast food-ish place: you order your food in an open kitchen, but after that you can eat it together with your friends and family in a more restaurant-like environment. Today I'm going to share my experience with you at Vapiano Groningen!
Vapiano Groningen is one of the newest Vapiano locations. Today there are already Vapianos in more than 30 countries on 5 continents, and many more international openings planned for the future. Vapiano Groningen is located in going out part of the city centre in Groningen. This means this area is very lively and fun. If you visit Vapiano more at night, you will spot a lot of students here, but if you go there a bit earlier it's actually fairly quiet (which I prefer). It's a huge building, so you can't miss it if you walking passed all the bars!
The concept of Vapiano is quite different: when you walk into Vapiano, you are greeted from the desk and given a smart card. This card is what you use to pay after your dinner. Instead of having a waiter, food is ordered directly from the kitchens. The chef prepares all of the dishes to order in front of you, so you can easily adjust your meal to your own personal preferences.
You can also use the herb garden and the fresh herbs on the tables to adjust the taste that every dish has even more. After your dinner, you pay for your food at the desk with the smart card that was given to you at the beginning. And that's it!
Address: Poelestraat 16-18, Groningen
“Chi va piano, va sano e va lontano”
According to an Italian proverb, “If you have an easy-going and relaxed approach to life, you’ll live more healthily and longer”. And this is exactly the attitude which is lived every day in our Vapianos - by both our guests and our employees, the Vapianisti.
The interior Vapiano Groningen is definitely on point. The high ceilings makes it look spacious, the greenery (they actually have a whole 'green wall' made of living plants!) gives it a fresh touch and the big windows add a lot of light to the interior.
However, the best thing about Vapiano's interior is its terrace. The Vapiano terrace is one of the most popular and frequented areas in the summer. Spacious and bright outdoor ash wood furniture with cushions and pillows invite the guests to linger. It has a stunning view on the Martini Toren, which is of course iconic for the Groningen skyline.
So yeah, the first time I visited Vapiano Groningen, I was definitely blown away by the grandeur of the 3 floor building (on the ground flour you can find the kitchens, the first floor is a nice sitting area and the second floor is a roof terrace).
Another thing that's characteristic to Vapiano are the big tables. Vapiano Groningen has large tables for up to eight people, to emphasize the communicative aspect of the Vapiano concept and the idea of shared joy. Family, friends, and strangers can enjoy time together this way.
Also, if you enjoy working outside your house, these big tables are great: they make you feel less like you're working alone, because there are other people sitting next to you, haha.
Definitely try out the Vapiano dolcis. Their tiramisu is to die for!
Now it's time for the most important part: the food! Honestly, Vapiano is one of my favorite Italian places I've ever visited. I just really, really love their food. They serve pasta, risotto, pizzas, antipasti, salads and dolci. Vapiano have a big variety of different dishes on their menu, so I am sure you are going to find something that you like. And if you're an Italian food lover like me, this is going to be a little piece of heaven on earth for you. ;)
"At Vapiano, it is always about freshness. You can watch us as we are working in our Manifattura. And even what you can’t see is made by our Vapianisti—by hand and in house."
Everything is freshly made, but also very affordable, making it the perfect place for students like me! I have already been to Vapiano Groningen quite often, and my favorites are definitely the whole wheat pasta funghi, the bruschetta and the amazing tiramisu. I enjoy them so much, I don't think I'll ever get tired of them. I really love the fact that Vapiano gives you the option to choose your own option, ánd that they have two whole wheat options as well.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Vapiano Groningen to anybody. It's a great location, beautiful interior and rooftop terrace and, of course, really nice food!
