How To Build Your Capsule Wardrobe with Basics

I have too many clothes, but nothing to wear - sounds familiar? I've struggled with this issue for quite a long time. Everyday I would wake up and spend such a long time searching for a cute outfit and never really feeling satisfied with the final result. I started to research why I had this and if there was a way I could fix it. That's when I discovered the capsule wardrobe system. It's a wardrobe organizing system based around basic wardrobe essentials every girl needs to have in her closet.

THE CAPSULE WARDROBE SYSTEM

So what is the capsule wardrobe exactly? Originally, the capsule wardrobe was a 37 pieces organizational system for your wardrobe. Each season, your wardrobe had to contain 37 pieces of clothing (everyday wear + shoes) and the rest of the non-seasonal items had to be put in storage. Every season switch you could then add to the 37 pieces by replacing some of them (or all) for seasonal items. Personally, this system is a bit to strict for me. So I've created my own persona twist on the capsule wardrobe system. Instead of counting all the items that I buy, I only treat what's on my clothing rack as my 'capsule wardrobe'. My favorite and most worn pieces are kept on my clothing rack, and the rest of my not as often worn pieces stay in my wardrobe. This way I use the same capsule wardrobe system, without restricting myself to 37 pieces.

Defintely don't forget to check out the video if you also want to see how the pieces look on + how I style them. • The White Tee. The first basic wardrobe essential for your capsule wardrobe should be a white tee. You have no idea how many outfits I wear during the week that are based around a white tee. It's super versatile and a real staple in my capsule wardrobe. It's great to casual down any formal piece or to add with a pair of mom jeans. Go for a white tee that's not see-through and has a crew neck for the most flattering effect. I bought mine at Zara.

  • The Button-Up Shirt/Blouse. The next basic essential for your capsule wardrobe is a white button-up shirt or blouse. A white shirt is not only essential for your more formal outfits, it's also very easy to style down with a pair of mom jeans and a cute leather jacket. I went for a very classic, tight-fitting silhouette with a small pocket from H&M. You can find a similar one from H&M here.

  • The Striped Tee. A striped tee is a good alternative for the white tee I mentioned earlier. This classic print looks good on anybody and gives you that instant Parisian vibe. However, I'm pretty picky when it comes to choosing stripes. That's why I was so happy when I finally found the perfect striped tee a while ago. You can find the striped tee from Asos here.

  • The Mom Jeans. Every girl should own a pair of nice fitting mom jeans. Period. I feel like skinny jeans are so overdone, while mom jeans have a way more interesting yet classic silhouette (I mean, even your mom was into them when she was younger!). However, it's pretty hard to find a really flattering pair of mom jeans. Luckily I finally found a pair in this very nice mid blue denim color. You can find these jeans from Pull & Bear here.

  • The Cigarette Pants. Cigarette pants are an essential for anybody that's working in a corporate enviroment - or not. I feel like cigarette pants make any outfit look classy, stylish and well put together. Being a petite girl, it's pretty hard to find a pair that isn't too long. Luckily Missguided has the best cigarette pants for petite girls (they also have special pants for tall girls too!). You can find a similar pair of cigarette pants to mine at Missguided here.

  • The Denim Jacket. I'm a big lover of jackets when it comes to styling my outfits. I always feel like my outfit isn't complete without a jacket as my 'third piece'. One of the most classic jackets you can add to your capsule wardrobe is a good ol' denim jacket. I especially love styling it with cigarette pants and dresses. I got this deconstructed and DIY back cropped denim jacket at Zara.

  • The Leather Jacket. It's no secret, but I'm a real leather jacket kind of gal. Honestly I feel like there's something missing if I'm not wearing a leather jacket that day. Me and my leather jacket are one, haha! Try to go for a biker jacket with silver hardware, because that's one of the most classic jackets you can add to your wardrobe. I bought this leather jacket at Zara.

  • The Black Ankle Boots. Time for shoes! So when it comes to shoes, bags and accessories, I honestly believe you should invest in them when possible. Most of my clothing comes from the high street, which is totally fine in my opinion. However, when it comes to accessories, I feel like you can really tell when something is cheap. That's why I really recommend investing in those pieces. My favorite, most worn pair of shoes is definitely my pair of Alexander Wang Gabi Boots. They're black with rose gold detailing, have a good, sturdy heel and an extremely comfy fit. For my blogpost about these shoes, click here. You can find these Alexander Wang Gabi Boots here.

  • The Nude Heels. Another pair of shoes you should add to your capsule wardrobe is a pair of nude heels. They elongate your legs + look good under any color dress. I've been searching for a pair of comfortable nude heels for a very long time, and finally found them on Asos! They are faux suede, strappy sandalettes with a silver, round buckle. You can find these Asos nude heels here.

  • The Designer Bag. Last, but so not least: I feel like every girl should own a designer bag. Ever since I've gotten into designer bags, I feel like my style has been on another level. A nice designer bag adds a touch of luxury to any outfit, making it feel put together and expensive (even if the rest of the outfit isn't). That's why I really recommend splurging on a designer bag that you love, is well-made, and will last you a lifetime. I personally went for the Gucci GG Dionysus Designer bag (click here for my whole blogpost + unboxing video about it). You can find this Gucci bag here.

I love this post and your YouTube video regarding these timeless pieces. Essentially, buying new clothes every season is too expensive. So I totally agree that those pieces can contribute massively towards what you pair with seasonal items, your entire outfit doesn’t necessarily have to be something new.
Also, the white tee, leather jacket and mom jeans combination, LOVE LOVE LOVE! you’re definitely my style icon.

    Lots of love,

Such a great post! When I first moved to the Netherlands I couldn’t bring a lot of clothes with me and that it was when I realized that I had to get rid of all the clothes that I don’t wear. So I brought the basics with me and little by little I built up my wardrobe again! Now I do exactly the same thing as you. I keep the most worn pieces on the rack! Btw I love the hangers, where did you buy them from?

    Kisses,
