Dreams do come true. Ever since I was a young girl, I dreamt about having my own walk-in closet. I remember watching Keeping Up With The Kardashians and drooling over their perfect walk-in closet. Now that I moved to Washington DC, I was fortunate enough to find a studio apartment with the perfect walk-in closet. Today I'm going to show you my walk-in closet tour and share with you how to create a Pinterest inspired walk-in closet for yourself!
HOW TO CREATE A PINTEREST INSPIRED WALK-IN CLOSET
Creating your own walk-in closet can be quite overwhelming. Where do you start? What do you need? How will it all come together, without looking messy? Don't worry girl, because I got you. If you follow these 5 steps, you will have your own Pinterest inspired walk-in closet in no time!
1. FIND A BUILD-IN CLOSET SYSTEM
The most important thing of any walk-in closet is the closet system itself. It is important to keep a couple things in mind when you're picking out a build-in closet system. Make sure that you measure the space you want your walk-in closet to be in, that you do some research online about the different options you can choose from, and make sure you know the budget you're working with. The closet system that is used in my studio apartment is from Home Depot. It comes with two clothing rails - a shorter and a longer one - and top shelfs for extra storage space. but I know that Ikea has a very popular walk-in wardrobe system as well.
2. ADD STORAGE SPACE
Next to having a build-in closet system, it is also nice to add some extra storage space to your walk-in closet. Although hanging your clothes is nice, some clothing can be better folded, especially to create that clean look. You could add a drawer for your jeans and tees, if you prefer to fold those. I used this Ikea Malm storage drawer + matching dividers for my lingerie, socks and PJs, because I like hanging all my clothes for that perfect overview of everything that I have. Furthermore, I added a shoe rack to keep all my shoes organized. Of course, I organized them all by color (although, most of my shoes are black or nude, haha). I used this TV unit from Ikea as my shoe rack, but it worked out perfectly! Furthermore, I also added this little white side table from Ikea for my designer bags. Gotta give my babies a good spot!
3. USE MATCHING CLOTHING HANGERS
This step is essential. Whenever you're creating the perfect Pinterest inspired walk-in closet, you NEED to use the same clothing hangers. It just look so messy in my opinion if you use different hangers. Although it can be a bit of an investment, in my opinion it is totally worth it. Because the theme in my studio apartment is white - blush pink - rose gold - marble, I went for these black velvet with rose gold hangers. I got mine at TJ/TK Maxx and Marshalls, because you can buy them for relatively cheap prices and in big amounts. Other good options for pretty clothing hangers are Primark, Jysk or these ones.
4. HOME DECOR ACCESSORIES
One of my favorite parts is adding home decor accessories. I love creating one style in my whole apartment, so I added accessories that fitted with the rest of my studio. First, the most important thing is to add a mirror. You cannot style your outfits without actually seeing them on! To save space, I used this white Ikea over the door mirror I would recommend to add a pouf or ottoman to your walk-in closet. They can be quite expensive, but they add such a luxurious feel to your wardrobe, that it is a must in my opinion! I was searching for ages for an affordable option, and found this perfect cream ottoman from Target here. Second, I would recommend adding some jewelry storage to your walk-in closet as well. To stick with my theme, I used these marble dishes from Target for all my bracelets and earrings, and this bigger marble and rose gold tray for my sunnies. Furthermore, I also used this rose gold dish from Urban Outfitters for my watches. Last, but not least, I recommed adding a small rug, such as this Ikea faux sheepskin, for that extra cosy touch.
5. COLOR GRADE YOUR CLOTHES
The last thing I would recommend doing is color grading your clothes. With that, I do not simply mean that you should hang your clothes based on their color, but that you should really create grading or ombre effect with your items. Not gonna lie, this definitely takes some time and practice to get it perfect. However, when you do, your closet will look so pretty!
