My Study Routine for Law School/University Exams

My Study Routine for Law School/University Exams

Ever since I've started studying at the George Washington University Law School and finished my first semester, my study routine for Law School/University exams has definitely changed. Not only is it quite different to study in a new country with a new legal system in general, the American system in particular also varies a lot from the Dutch study system I am used to. Although I would say that the level of difficulty of the courses is the same, American Law Schools expect way more preparation, interaction, and discussion from you during their lectures based on the Socratic method, and you also have to juggle more law courses than in the Dutch system. So how do I do it?

1. Prep yourself

Before starting your study routine for exams, it is important to prepare yourself. A little me-time never hurted anyone. I know it is quite tempting to immediately start studying for your exams like a crazy person, without wasting any minute on unnecessary stuff. However, this will make you feel extremely stressed and all over the place. It's better to take some time to clean your work space, make yourself a healthy snack, put on a cute outfit, and do your make-up. This way you will start studying like a girlboss.

2. Organize all your materials

One of the things that most people forget when studying for their exams is to make sure that you have ALL their materials organized. More often than not professors hand out multiple handouts, papers, coursepacks and other study materials, aside from the regular study books. That is why I always make sure to have sorted and organized every document I have received from the professor, to make sure that I have all the materials needed to ace the exam. I use a document folder to organize all the papers.

3. Make a realistic planning

I know, I know: Making a study planning seems obvious. However, I feel like it is quite hard to create a good, but also realistic planning for during your exams. I always use my Supplied by Lily Student Desk Planner in order to keep my mind and life organized. This planner honestly changed my life, because it made me way more organized and on top of my studies. If you want to order one for yourself as well, use the discount code LILYLIKECOM15 for 15% off any planner. The desk planner comes in two prints - Luxurious Marble and Luxurious Floral - so you can choose which one suits your aesthetics better! You can order Supplied by Lily stationery here.

4. Read all the materials beforehand

One of the most important tips that I can give you is to make sure that you keep up with your study work DURING the semester. It can be very challenging to read all the materials before exam time is around the corner, but trust me: It will safe you a lot of energy and stress. If you do all your readings during the semester, you can focus on really prepping for your exams during exam time.

5. Make an outline

I honestly live for making outlines of everything that I need to know. Not only are outlines extremely useful when you're trying to memorize the study materials, the act of creating an outline itself makes you remember the different terms better as well. If you're struggling with what you should put in your outline, I recommend using the powerpoint or syllabus as the core of your guideline. Mainly focus on what the professor discussed in class or emphasized as important, and I promise you, you will be fine!

6. Practice, practice, practice

Practice makes perfect. In every study routine, it is important to give yourself time to memorize your outline and use practice exams to prepare yourself for the real deal. I love doing practice exams, because they give you a good idea of what you can expect on the real exam. If your professor does not provide you with any practice exams, try to ask for specific sample questions, or go over the discussion topics emphasized in class.

This is very inspiring! I really appreciate you tips and couldn’t agree more about realistic planning. I am one who always overestimates what I can do in a day and having to make a point of taking a good, hard look at what I can actually and how long it will take. I really enjoy reading your blog and watching your videos on YouTube, please keep it up. xoxo

This is a good routine! I feel like this kind of method keeps you sane during exams. The most important part is probably keeping up with things during the semester. Putting everything off until the end is a huge mistake!
