Moving abroad is no joke. There are a lot of preparations you need to do before you are actually ready to start your journey in another country. Having an accomodation to stay, fixing your passport or visa and getting your courses approved by the board - these are just a couple of things you need to take care when you want to study abroad.

Another thing that is quite the struggle is how to pack your suitcase for studying abroad. There is a lot of information to be found when it comes to packing your suitcase for a short trip or a Summer holiday, but when it comes to packing your suitcase for a semester or year abroad I could not find a lot of useful tips. In this blogpost + video I will share all my tips for packing your suitcase when you are going on an Erasmus+ exchange. I also created a Study Abroad Packing List printable you can download for free!

WHAT IS ERASMUS+?

I think most of you are already familiar with the Erasmus+ programme, but if you are not: Erasmus+ is an exchange programme combining in one single programme all initiatives in the field of education, training, youth and sport. If you ever considered doing an exchange programme in Europe, Erasmus+ is definitely the exchange programme you should consider. Not only is an exchange experience perfect for building your CV, it will also broaden your horizon when it comes to different cultures, and give you friends from all over the world.

Since 2014, Erasmus was renamed to Erasmus+, because all the different Erasmus+ programmes fall now under one name. The 30th anniversary of Erasmus+ celebrates inclusion (anyone can take part in or benefit from Erasmus+) and impact (the Erasmus+ exchange has impacted lives of the participants in many ways). I would highly recommend you check out Erasmus+, because an exchange will change your life - for the better. You can find more information about the Erasmus+ here.

"Wider horizons, a broader common understanding and a larger toolset define the Erasmus+ generation."

BEAUTY

  • Minimize your beauty products. When it comes to beauty, I would definitely recommend trying to bring as little as possible. Not only are beauty items really bulky and heavy, it's also fun to do some shopping in the country you are moving to and try out some new stuff!
  • Bring products you actually use. Although it seems like it's necessary to bring your complete make-up stash with you, you should only bring your everyday make-up with you + 1 or 2 of your favorite palettes. You probably end up using only your everyday make-up products anyway + the more you take with you, the bigger the chances are some of the products will get damaged during travel.
  • Use multiple make-up bags. Stay away from those big, bulky make-up cases, and opt for multiple, smaller make-up bags. This way you have more flexibility when it comes to packing your suitcase.

FASHION

  • Research the climate of the country you're moving to. I have to be honest guys, I really failed at this one. When I moved to Washington DC, I thought the climate would be quite similar to the Netherlands. However, DC is way warmer and more humid. I definitely brought too many warm coats with me and not enough shorts. That's why I really recommend researching the climate of the country you're moving to before packing.
  • Use vacuum bags for big (Winter) coats. Coats can definitely take up a lot of space in your suitcase. That's why it's a good idea to pack all your bulky clothing items in vacuum bags - it will save you so much room!
  • Bring your clothing hangers. Another tip is to pack your clothes with your clothing hanger attached. This way you will be certain that you will have enough clothing hangers in your new room/apartment without spending money on new ones. Hangers don't take a lot of space in your suitcase, so it's easy to take them with you.

LIFESTYLE

  • Use your carry-on suitcase. Instead of using a carry-on bag, I would definitely recommend going for a carry-on suitcase. A carry-on suitcase is way easier to carry, fits more stuff, and keeps your precious items safe. I always put all my tech/camera gear in my carry-on, because I am really scared of getting robbed.
  • Bring some small & cosy interior items with you. I recommend bringing a couple of your fave interior items with me. They don't have to take up a lot of space in your suitcase: think of items like fairy lights, candles or a cute mouse pad. This way your apartment will feel more home-y and cosy!
