I’ve had my fair share of saying goodbye to past chapters. People who seemed to be irreplacable characters have left, slowly being replaced by completely different persons in my life. My storyline has experienced many unexpected voltas, and I have come to terms with the fact that there will be many still to come. While most things become easier the more often you experience them, I’ve learned that farewells only seem to become harder over time. Those never get easier, especially when it comes to saying goodbye to your relationship.
I always thought that I would meet him when I was casually reading a magazine at a coffee shop. Or that I would bump into him while picking up the same dvd at the local video store. Or that I would find him waiting in line at a concert of our shared favorite rapper. I could never get rid of that persistent little thought in the back of my mind, saying “what if today, of all days, is the day I will meet him?” So I always made sure I was wearing those jeans that made my butt look good, or that skirt with some sexy leg action. It never happened. I tried pushing this thought away as much as possible, and instead, focus on my personal growth and development.
I am laying in my bed on the floor. Surrounded by dusty pink pillows and fairy lights, I stare out of the floor-to-ceiling window of my new apartment in Washington DC. I have come a long way. A way different than expected; a way leading to other destinations than planned. Exactly one year ago from today, that way was leading me to the point of questioning my whole existence. Why did this happen to me? How did I allow a person like that into my life, let alone so close to me? Doesn’t this only exist in the movies? I still remember everything, and especially how it felt. I can never forget that. Exactly one year ago from now, I broke up with the person I was in love with. The reason why I had to break up with him, was because he happened to be a compulsive liar.
