New year, new goals. Although one can argue that setting new year’s resolutions is just another way of making yourself feel like a miserable failure, since everyone knows new year’s resolutions only tend to last for a few weeks, I personally find it quite satisfying to start the new year with some new personal goals. Therefore, I am going to share I did and didn’t achieve in 2018, as well as setting 5 goals for 2019. I think setting new goals for yourself is just as important as reflecting on your old ones, so that is why I will be discussing both in this blogpost.
I’ve had my fair share of saying goodbye to past chapters. People who seemed to be irreplacable characters have left, slowly being replaced by completely different persons in my life. My storyline has experienced many unexpected voltas, and I have come to terms with the fact that there will be many still to come. While most things become easier the more often you experience them, I’ve learned that farewells only seem to become harder over time. Those never get easier, especially when it comes to saying goodbye to your relationship.
Beauty empowers intelligence – a controversial motto I live by. How often have I been shamed for wearing high heels to class, or too much make-up when studying. Being told “you are superficial”, “you are wasting your time on unimportant girly sh*t”, and “I thought you were smart, but you do not look like it” by both men and women, has unfortunately not been uncommon for me.
I am writing again. This simple statement feels like a huge accomplishment. Finding the time to pick up a pen and paper seems like one of the lesser difficulties in life. Most people would argue that other things, such as finding yourself, finding keys in your overflowing hand bag when running late, or finding the right way to that governmental building to file an overwhelming amount of bureaucratic documents in order to stay in a country you actually like are harder things in life to find. However, based on my personal experience, finding the time to write is something I found very difficult as well.
Dear Diary… This was the last day of my old life. A life as an ambitious law student in Washington DC at the George Washington University Law School. A life filled with sleepless caffeinated study nights in the law library, long calls with my girls about how much we wanted to cry over our papers, and friendships I made for a lifetime. It’s time to say goodbye. This is my last day of law school; and the first day of my new life. Today, is the first day of a new beginning.
